All about
Order Bump is a Shopify Plus app that helps you display offers for cross-sell or upsell specifically on the checkout page. After doing a lot of research, the OrderBump team discovered there are key differences between product page intent, in cart intent, and checkout intent to purchase. When a customer has reached checkout, they’ve gone over a lot of mental hurdles to purchase, which makes it an ideal place to make an irresistible offer. Kind of like the candy at the register of your digital store.
So if you sell shoes, you can add a simple offer for cleaning product right there on the checkout page, and it turns out this is a great time to remind prospective customers of an additional item that they should consider adding to their cart.
That being said, you need to have the right type of cross-sell and upsell products in your catalog to make a tool like this work. It can’t have variants or sizing, it's a one click simple product upsell and adds the product directly to the cart without sending the user back to a product page or away from checking out.
And obviously because this is checkout only, it requires Shopify Plus, and they currently don’t offer it on any other platforms.
What’s a Rich Text element?
The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
How to customize formatting for each rich text
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
No one else is doing exactly this, a small in-line box offer during checkout, it really is very clean-cut. Some offer checkout offers but they are sidebar or pop-up not just this one little box.
Many other upsell tools require a 3rd party payment processor/checkout, hijacking Shopify’s native checkout has risks and costs.
And while this app is in the early stages of its development, it’s only going to get more powerful when they add a rule builder, allowing for different products based on products in cart or size of cart, and then even more powerful when they add A/B testing, and of course the ultimate power will be when you simply write the upsell copy on a bunch of offers and they use a machine learning algorithm to figure out which offer is best for which products. I’m sure that’s coming for the future of this app, but it’s probably a ways out.
Another thing I really like is their simple pricing and it isn’t scaling with success, its fixed, which means your margins are safe!
Average order value is what you’re looking to increase. And you will be able to see the revenue directly tracked back to clicking the upsell “add to cart” button. In the near future, it may have even already been released, you will also see the percentage of orders accepting the upsell to get a clearer feel for that. Of course you can already figure that out in your analytics if you feel the need.
Metrics:
- Average Order Value (AOV)
- Revenue from upsells
- Upsell success rate
Installing OrderBump is a very simple app integration, and then edit to your checkout.liquid Shopify theme to get that little box exactly where it needs to be and looking proper on mobile and desktop. You can add the code yourself or have them do it for you if you’re not comfortable.
Every store needs to be thinking about how to maximize that average order value. If you have great complementary products that are often bought together, this is a great way to get more people buying more. If you have a simple product that can easily be added to every single order, this is perfect. And you can use this in conjunction of other upsell tools that maybe do bundles or discount offers, but only on the product detail or cart pages.
If you don’t have any complementary products you obviously can’t get value from this, and instead should be thinking about expanding your product line. If you’re not on Shopify Plus, I don’t know how you made it this far in the video, ha. If you need specific upsells for specific products, like it wouldn’t make sense to offer shoe cleaner if people were buying say a baseball bat, then you may need a tool that has more complex rule building, or you may need to wait until OrderBump releases that feature, which I’m sure would be soon. In fact, I’d recommend just signing up for their tool and getting on the list now, and then waiting for that email announcement.
